WE NEED EXTREME RISK
PROTECTION ORDERS.
The vast majority of people considering suicide give warning signs they are considering harming themselves. Family members may notice, but when it comes to firearm suicide have few options to act.
That matters because gun suicide is almost always fatal. Bipartisan legislation for Extreme Risk Protection Orders would create a life-saving tool in Pennsylvania. These orders allow close family members to petition a court to temporarily remove firearms--cutting overall suicide rates more than 15%.
The only thing standing in the way of these life-saving orders: action in Harrisburg. If you can’t prevent a gun suicide before an attempt, it is almost always fatal. But, family members whose loved one is in crisis lack a critical tool to remove the firearm while the individual gets help.
That’s why Rep. Stephens and O’Mara have introduced Extreme Risk Protection Orders legislation. It’d allow family members and law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily remove the firearm. And it’s been shown in other states to cut suicides by 15%-20%.
